FREE LESSON: Clothesline Fractions

By:  The Owl Teacher
Grades 2-5

Fraction is such a difficult concept for elementary students.  I try to make it fun and more hand-on than any other math concept.  One way I do this is through the use of my clothesline fraction activity.

During this activity, I provide students with a piece of yarn, a few small craft sticks, and several t-shirts that I have printed up early.  Students cut out their shirts and determine where on the number line it goes.  The small craft sticks represent the benchmark numbers 0, 1/2, and 1.

I also differentiate my student's t-shirts by the color I printed it on.  For instance some students know their fractions a bit better than others, so I provide them with fractions more than one.

You can read about this fun activity and download it here at my blog!  While you are there consider signing up for my newsletter where once a month you get freebies in your inbox!

I hope you enjoy this fun activity!

Happy Teaching!
