Sight-Word-Stages Leveled Readers - Differentiate by Printing!

  SWS intro

As educators, we have all kinds of fun activities and strategies for teaching and reinforcing sight words for reading and writing. Many of them involve practicing these words out of context. The point of Sight Word Recognition is to be able to recognize these words at a glance, in isolation. But all of the practice needn't be. I am in the early stages of creating a series of readers called 'Sight Word Stages' readers to help teachers differentiate for their students within the same reading level.

While some of our students may struggle with putting all of the pieces of the reading puzzle together and need to work on that, there are many others who simply have difficulty remembering, and who require extra opportunities to practice using these little words in context.

Here is an example of a DRA/Reading Recovery Level 2 Reader:

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - "Antonyms-Puzzles-Free"

Language Arts - Antonyms Center

by Molly McMahon

2nd-4th grade

I have a complete set partial set of antonym puzzles.  I love the interlocking feature of these wooden two-piece puzzles.  The pictures on each puzzle piece is also helpful to children with limited reading ability.  It is a nice prompt for them.
Here's what a few of the pieces look like:

This set was used for many years as a literacy center.  I don't recall where I got them.  I should have purchased a few extra sets . . . . but I didn't.  Over time, several of the pieces were lost.  This is the reason why I should have purchased extra sets.  Especially when they were inexpensive.  I should have foreseen the inevitable instead of pretending that I was existing in a "THINGS-NEVER-GET-LOST-CLASSROOM-UTOPIA"!

The image below shows the many pieces I now possess with no match:

GOOD NEWS!  I created two sets of antonym puzzles.

These puzzles don't have the interlocking feature that the wooden puzzles have.  They are made of card-stock.  Nonetheless, they work reasonably well.

Best of all, I will never worry about losing pieces.  I can always print more!

There is a minimal amount of time in preparing the puzzles.  Print on card-stock paper and cut on the solid black lines.  You will have an instant literacy center!

My two-piece antonym puzzles do not have the image prompts as the wooden ones shown in the first photo have.  Students will need to be proficient readers to use these paper puzzles.  There are two sets of puzzles.  The first set uses basic words.  The second set is a step above set one.  I'm measuring set one at second and third grade level.  Set two will be for third and fourth grades.  If you have advanced first and second graders, they may enjoy using both sets.

Now for the BEST NEWS!  This product is free at my Teachers Pay Teachers shop!  Click on the image shown below to get the center:

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/antonyms-puzzles-free-1822437

The words used in these antonym puzzles align with my antonyms bingo games.  Antonyms are woven into the Common Core State Standards.  If you teach in the state of Virginia, they are also in the Standards of Learning.  If you are interested in finding out more about my antonyms resources, click on either of the two images shown below to view another blog post on the subject.

Making File Folder Activities Using My No Prep Packs!

http://www.thedabblingspeechie.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/file-folder-activities-no-prep.png

I have been creating file folder activities for my students to use during therapy and at articulation and language centers.

I used my print n' go worksheets from my Spring edition pack.

http://www.thedabblingspeechie.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/silly-sentence-sequencing-blog-pic.png
I also used my Sequencing Worksheet to create file folders.
Now, I can use these resources over and over again!  It was a little prep in the beginning, but I am set for next year!
