Here's a back to school display that your students will create, focused on reading and writing the names of new school friends, with the added benefit of repeated exposure to early sight words as your students read and reread the display!
Your students will write their own name and a classmate's name, using one of eight writing templates. Using the context of simple, repetitive sentences, frequent rereadings will strengthen these early literacy skills:
→ One-to-one match
→ Directionality (left to right, return sweep)
→ Monitoring with known words
→ Fluent expression and phrasing
→ Mastery of early sight words
When you complete this activity with your PreK through first grade students, here's what you'll have:
→ A classroom display suitable for Back to School Night or Open House. Add some fun pointers and your read-the-room center is ready to use!
→ Book covers to turn your display into a class book
