FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Become a Writing Expert: Analyzing Prompts and Writing Samples”

by The Creative Classroom
5th - 12th Grade

Do your students struggle with understanding what a writing prompt is asking them to do? Are you looking for a way to have your students be responsible for creating the criteria for an exemplar writing response? I have created this two step guide that is based on the steps that I have used in my own classroom to help students better understand what a writing prompt is asking them to do and having students analyze writing samples to determine the criteria for their writing response.

This guide will help teachers to determine student understanding of the writing prompt and correct any misconceptions BEFORE students begin writing. After students have identified what the prompt is asking them to do, they will analyze strong and weak writing samples to identify the characteristics of writing in each sample. This will help students determine what criteria their own response needs to include to be a strong writing response.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Marzano's Levels of Understanding (0-4 Point Scale) Poster and Rubric”

by Beyond Traditional Math
1st - 8th Grade

Each day in class we have a learning target. In order for the learning target to be meaningful to students, they must interact with it. My plan this year (for every learning target) is to have students rate themselves at the beginning of the lesson and again at the end.

In this resource you will find a landscape version of the 4 point scale that can be printed and enlarged to put on the wall to help this process. I plan to cut out each box, post it on the wall and put grahics underneath.

At the end of this download you'll notice a rubric where the student can put their name and the learning target. There is also a scale that is all on one page with a place for comments. This is so that you can check in on essential skills or benchmarks periodically throughout the school year. I might even have the student rate themselves in pencil, and I might do my rating in pen. I'll add comments and feedback below.

Marzano's levels of understanding have been around for a long time, I hope this resource could help us all embed it into our classroom language.

Place Value

Merry Christmas everyone!  I hope you all had a beautiful holiday.  Since moving to first grade, I've spent a lot of time researching curriculum and getting to know my lovely new class.  That's why I haven't blogged for a while.

I think one of the hardest things to teach is explaining tens and ones to first-graders who sometimes don't know how to read larger numbers.  As always, I think games, music, and books really help the kids to explore and understand the concept.  Some cool songs I found that delve into this concept are:

Climbing Up This Mountain (Counting by 10's up to 100) by Harry Kindergarten
Count By 10's to 120 by Jack Hartmann
"Grouping by Tens" by Mar Harman
"Counting by Tens" by Mar Harman

I also found a video for teaching place value:

Introduction to Place Value from Khan Academy

It was really funny.  A high school teacher friend of mine told me about Khan Academy.  I had never heard of it before.  I guess the story is that this man started making videos for his niece to explain mathematical concepts.  He's really thorough.  My kids were spellbound when they watched the video.

I haven't found a lot of books that talk about place value, but here are some books that I used this year:

The Cheerios Counting Book by Barbara McGarth
Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3 by Bill Martin, Jr.
A Collection for Kate by Barbara deRubertis

Because I'm extremely new at teaching first grade, I thought it would be good to go to TPT and see what other first-grade teachers have made for this concept.  I found this terrific "I Have, Who Has" game that worked great for my kids:

I Have, Who Has Tens and Ones Blocks Game by Math Minds

I also made a clip card game for greater than and less than with numbers up to 100:

Greater Than and Less Than Clip Cards to 100

I hope this helps.  If any of you have ideas for teaching tens and ones, please leave a comment below.  Or just leave a comment say say hello!  I miss talking to all of you.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Conclusions Are Like Dessert: A FREE Writing Lesson”

by Secondary Sara
6th - 12th Grade

Conclusions can be tough to write, but they are so critical to an essay: the equivalent of a dessert after a meal, leaving a final impression on the reader.

This 45-minute lesson introduces students to conclusion paragraphs through a relatable metaphor and the analysis of two sample paragraphs as mentor texts. Students then learn about the “recipe” for an effective and engaging conclusion before attempting to write their own.

Applicable to ANY informative or argumentative essay, this handout is a ready-to-go formative assessment, letting students safely try to write their own paragraph using a short, manageable checklist of criteria. These paragraphs become quick grading for you later!

This lesson aligns to the following CCSS standards:
Grades 6-8: W.6.1e/W.6.2f, W.7.1e/W.7.2f, W.8.1e/W.8.2f,
Grades 9-10: W.9-10.1e/ W.9-10.2f
Grades 11-12: W.11-12.1e/ W.11-12.2f.
