FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “FREE Revision Read-Aloud Activity for Improving Student Writing”

by Secondary Sara
6th - 9th Grade

My FAVORITE revision activity is to have students read their own work out loud; it usually becomes their favorite strategy too, but it’s not something that most students will naturally do on their own. Demonstrate this life skill for students and change the way they view the revision process!

Using this 3-page handout as a guide, your class will first discuss what the strategy is and self-assess their initial understanding of it; two credible articles are hyperlinked if you also wish to do non-fiction background reading on the subject.

Students then transition into independent read-aloud with a timer, recording observations of what they notice and what changes should be made in the next draft. Finally, they complete partner read-alouds to help give their peers feedback about what to edit or revise. (As a bonus, the sheet also gives tips for how to use text-to-speech software to let a computer read the essay TO you.)

Download this FREE 45-minute activity and repeat it with future rough drafts to improve the quality of student writing (and your overall grading experience)!

NOTE: EDITABLE versions of this product are INCLUDED in my Public Speaking Activity Bundle and myEditing & Revising Bundle. Check them out to save big!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Two No-Prep Lesson Plans for ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ by James Thurber”

by Write with a Point
6th - 8th Grade

James Thurber's great short story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," is a smart, imaginative story that will engage your students from beginning to end. Back in 2013, it was even made into a movie starring Ben Stiller (who also directed the film). In both tellings, Walter is an intriguing and enjoyable character that students can easily relate to. And with these two, no-prep lesson plans, it's easy to incorporate this text into your classroom.

This freebie includes two no-prep lesson plans for you to choose from: a close reading with analytical one-pager prompts or a two-day creative writing activity. The strategies presented are engaging and adaptable. There's no prep work required. And either lesson would make a great emergency sub plan.

If you'd like, you can view the expanded versions of these plans on my blog. And you can find more free lesson plans at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Need more Mitty? Try my jigsaw activity lesson bundle. Or if you'd rather have students compare the story and the movie, check out my compare and contrast graphic organizers.
