FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Semicolons, Cupcakes and Cucumbers Grades 1-3”

by The Fun Factory
1st - 3rd Grade

Four friends, period, comma, question mark and exclamation point, are excited to play together, but each one has a different idea of what they should do. With everyone only thinking about themselves, their friendship almost comes to a full stop, until a strange and unexpected newcomer shows them how much more fun life can be when everyone works together.

This freebie contains posters describing each punctuation mark and task cards for a class game, based on the conversations in the book.

Images created by Steve Newberry are used with permission from The Innovation Press.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Story Elements Book Analysis (FREE)”

by Jessica Osborne
3rd - 7th Grade

Story Elements Book Analysis Chart- Use this free story elements book analysis chart any time on any book (independent reading, class novel, or picture book.)

**NOTE! This entire product is a part of my STORY ELEMENTS UNIT which includes notes, games, quizzes, projects and assignments on the story elements!

3 PAGES INCLUDED:
1. Detailed teacher directions with a list of suggested picture books for analysis.
2. Blank student chart with two columns. Each row analyzes different parts of the story from the characters and setting to the conflict resolution and theme. (This chart can be copied front and back to allow for analysis on four books per sheet of paper.)
3. Chart with one column filled in on the story of Cinderella as an example

SOME WAYS TO USE THIS CHART:
1. Supply a large selection of children’s picture books at the front of the classroom. Allow partners to work together to read four of the books and fill out the chart on each one.

2. Allow the children to complete one column on their class novel (with or without a partner.) Then have them complete the second column on their independent reading book.

3. Have them complete both columns on independent reading books as they finish them. You can continue to use this chart all year long, having them turn a copy in after every two books they read (or four if you copy it front and back.)

4. If you wish for them to only complete one column rather than two, you may print the example with the Cinderella notes for the students. Then they will have an example directly next to their own writing

1st - 8th Grade

These are great for the kids to use when they are reading to identify which figurative language they are reading or they are a great cheat sheet to use when writing.

You can print in color or black/white to save ink. Let the kids color their own.

I would recommend printing on card stock and then laminating. Use a hole punch to cut out the hole, add a ribbon or yarn to decorate. =)

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Fall FREEBIE Shared Reading Read & Sing Early Reader”

by Southern Fried Teachin
Pre-Kindergarten - 1st Grade

Fall FREEBIE Read and Sing Early Reader; Sing Each Page to "Where Is Thumbkin?"; FUN way to practice reading, increase fluency through singing and repetition, and improve vocabulary

This Early Reader part of my Early Reader - It Is Fall.

This an early reader that talks about all things fall.

Each page is sung to the tune of "Where Is Thumbkin?"

I taught English to visually impaired children in Korea. Music was very effective with them, and I was always taking what they were learning and putting it to music. They loved learning with music and remembered what they have learned. "Where is Thumbkin?" was a perfect song for ESL students and early learners since it involves repetition.

FREE MISC. LESSON - “Venn Diagrams using The Button Box”

by Mrs Schlachter
Kindergarten - 4th Grade

Venn Diagrams are used in all subject areas to compare and contrast. The Button Box by Margarette S. Reid is a great book to read to students and introduce them to how to complete Venn diagrams based on attributes. In this activity, I have a double Venn diagram for younger students and a triple Venn diagram for older students as well as a sample page of buttons. When I use this book, I bring in the large bag of buttons I bought at the local discount store. Don't forget to address where to place the buttons that do not have any of the attributes given.

Venn diagrams are often included on state tests. This is a great cross-curricular activity!
