Feature Seller - Elsie's Corner

Elsie's Corner - Where Creativity and Intelligence Meet

Tell us about yourself.
Hello everyone! We are two public school teachers (and cousins), working in New York City.
My name is Lori; I started my teaching career in 1995 as a middle school English teacher.  In 2005, I transitioned to elementary school and taught all subject areas in both a general and special education setting.  In 2014, I embarked on my career as a Reading Intervention teacher in order to assist and instruct struggling readers.  My part in Elsie’s Corner is primarily creating the academic content of each product.
My name is Anthony; I started my teaching career in 2012 as a High School Social Studies teacher. In my first year of teaching, I proved to many of the administrators that I was very good in the technology field. By 2013 I had already been given a full schedule of Video Production and Graphic Design classes. My part in Elsie’s Corner is to take what cousin Lori creates and design the product so that it comes to life. In addition, I create marketing content for social media promotion.

What do you like best about teaching?
We love being intellectual entertainers!  Taking rigorous academic content, twisting, turning, and molding it into something that is relatable and engaging for youngsters is very rewarding.

Describe your favorite TpT product.
Although it is difficult to choose; we’d have to say our Book Report LapBook.  This little worm has wriggled his way into countless classrooms and judging by the feedback we’ve received, students and teachers just love him!            Our Bookworm Lapbook gives students an opportunity to show off their comprehension and analysis of any book.  The many interactive foldables included are a fun way for students to display their knowledge and present their book using their individual creativity.

What advice would you give to someone who may want to become a seller at Teachers Pay Teachers?
Slow and steady wins the race.  It’s easy to get caught up with the mind-blowing statistics of the teachers who have become millionaires.  But for us, it’s all about taking the time (and it does take TIME!) to create products that we love and are proud off.  Each of our products are our “babies”.  We take the time to nurture and develop them before we put them on the TpT shelf. Sometimes it takes months before a product is ready to go, and that’s okay with us. In the end, we’re far more concerned with quality over quantity.

What have you done or hope to do with your TpT earnings?
Lori: For now, I am using the money to assist in the renovations to my home.  One day, I’d like to say that TpT allowed me to live in my dream home!
Anthony: I’ve been putting my TpT savings away into investments for the future. So far, I haven’t spent a dollar of the earnings.

What do you like best about being a member of The Best of Teacher Entrepreneurs Marketing Cooperative?
We are looking forward to having the opportunity to collaborate with the other members of TBOTEMC. Although going onto the site as a newbie can be a bit overwhelming, after only a few days we are starting to understand what we have to do to get the most out of being a member!

FREE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON - “FREE Current Event Articles: Foreign Language, Social Studies *recently updated!”

by LaProfesoraFrida
5th - 12th Grade

Help your students become responsible world citizens by allowing an opportunity to study current events in other countries on a regular basis.

This could be a weekly, monthly, semester or year long project for any classroom! This activity is perfectly suited for a government class, world history, social studies or foreign language class. But I can see this research being done in so many different classes. It would be a wonderful activity for a speech/public speaking class too.

I wrote this document for use in my Spanish classes, but as you can see, it can easily be changed for any foreign language classroom, social studies, or government class. And being the creative teacher that YOU are, I'm sure you can think of many more applications!

My students are having a blast this semester with this activity. They know that every Thursday their Current Event Article is due, and they get to share the articles they found for the week with their classmates. I also offer a few points of extra credit for students who share their articles in front of the class-- You wouldn't believe how many students clamber to share their articles! And they find the most interesting news!! They're not only keeping themselves and their classmates up to date on worldnews, they're helping to keep ME up to date! My only regret is that I didn't start using this at the beginning of the school year!

I hope this document works for you! If you have a wonderful experience or anecdote about using this product in your class, please share it here! And please visit my other products. Thank you!

Enjoy! ♥ La Profesora Frida

Free CVC Pages - No Prep!

Teach your students the short "e" sound with

these free sheets and poster.

Welcome! I'm Rose from Rosie's Resources. Are your students busy practicing for state tests? Want to keep them motivated? Here’s a solution.

1.  Photocopy stacks of awards on colored paper. Keep them handy, wherever you’re working with kids—at your desk, at your guided instruction table, etc. Every time kids score 100% on their practice, give them an award.
2.  Let kids know about the awards before they start their practice. They will work hard to earn the certificate!
3.  Keep giving the certificates out. Kids like to collect these. Sometimes they get little competitions going to see who can earn the most.
4.  Differentiate when necessary. For example, you can give an award for improvement.
5.  Assign an early finisher as a helper. He/she can fill in student names while you’re remediating with other kids.

6.  This is a very simple way to communicate with parents. They are so proud when their child comes home with an award!
You may download a free set of awards by clicking here.  Enjoy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Call of the Wild - Vocabulary Words with Sentences from Novel”

by Mark Welch
7th - 9th Grade

This is a list of 351 vocabulary words from Jack London's novel, The Call of the Wild. Each vocabulary word is shown together with the sentence from the novel in which the word is first used.

The list is intended as a "starting point" for teachers seeking to extract a meaningful collection of vocabulary words. Obviously, you won't assign all 351 of these words, but instead you'll select words to fit a particular strategy or theme. For example, you might choose words that are related to a theme such as "transformation" or "animal" or "hostility/combat," or you might choose words that illustrate how words can be modified with affixes, or you might choose words which have "an unusual meaning" or "multiple meanings." Theme-related tags appear in brown. (When I taught the novel, I started by calling students' attention to the word "booming," near the start of the first chapter, and elicited their participation to identify multiple relevant meanings.)

This is an HTML document (web page, viewable using any web browser). You can also "cut and paste" the data or import it into Excel or another software program to sort, manipulate, and edit.

Shapes with Feelings - Apples

By Sparking Children's Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten - 2nd Geometry

Put some feelings into helping your students identify 2D and their properties with this classroom display.

Shifting focus is an important skill. To be able to shift the attention from one aspect to another helps to improve learning, thinking and creative efforts. Deliberately noticing different aspects of a rather simple task may help a child to stay focused and to engage in the learning.

The links between thinking and feelings/emotions are often ignored in school as well as in life. And shifting the focus from a happy face and body language to picking out concepts such as roundness is one way to combine both. The idea is to engage children in exploring shapes and hopefully the learning experience will be richer.

The child does not have to link their own feelings to the shapes rather they look at a picture of a sad girl or boy and then they have to look at the shape and describe the 2D shape.

You will find two display options in this packet.
2D shapes in color and in black-line (you may have students colour in)

Laminate for durability. Display on the bulletin board or on the classroom wall.

The 2D shapes included are:
square, circle, triangle, rectangle, oval, octagon, hexagon, rhombus, pentagon, trapezoid/trapezium

There are also two pages in colour and two in black-line where the students can look for similar shapes - apples as well as "normal" shapes are used.

Happy Exploring!
