FREE LESSON: Clothesline Fractions

By:  The Owl Teacher
Grades 2-5

Fraction is such a difficult concept for elementary students.  I try to make it fun and more hand-on than any other math concept.  One way I do this is through the use of my clothesline fraction activity.

During this activity, I provide students with a piece of yarn, a few small craft sticks, and several t-shirts that I have printed up early.  Students cut out their shirts and determine where on the number line it goes.  The small craft sticks represent the benchmark numbers 0, 1/2, and 1.

I also differentiate my student's t-shirts by the color I printed it on.  For instance some students know their fractions a bit better than others, so I provide them with fractions more than one.

You can read about this fun activity and download it here at my blog!  While you are there consider signing up for my newsletter where once a month you get freebies in your inbox!

I hope you enjoy this fun activity!

SCIENCE LESSON: Ecosystems Accordion

By:  The Owl Teacher
Grades 2-5

I love science, and I especially love when I can some how integrate science and reading.  That's where thi product comes in!

I really wanted my students to know more about the various ecosystems, but I just didn't have the time during science to teach it.  So, I created nonfiction reading pieces about each ecosystem and created this fun accordion craftivity to go with it!

In this activity, students read a "booklet" of each type of ecosystem and then determine the main characteristics of each section, along with the animals and plants.  They then color it and put it together using three pieces of construction paper.  (like the picture above).  Below is a picture of just one ecosystem demonstrated.
I have also created other resources similar to this one in my TpT store.

You can find this product here at my TpT store.  It's one of my favorite and top sellers!

FREE LESSON: Layers of the Earth Freebie

By:  The Owl Teacher
Grades 2-5

Are you looking for a free activity to download to
evaluate what students know about the three layers of the earth?

This fun activity is a cut and paste activity where students sort the characteristics of each earth layer into its appropriate column.  It could be used as homework, for early finishers, or classwork.

You can download it at my blog found here.  This is straight out of my Earth Changes Unit were students learn all about the fast and slow change of the earth- including earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, weathering, erosion and so much more.

You can find that unit here.

Happy teaching!

MATH LESSON - Multiplication Fact Fluency

By:  The Owl Teacher
2nd - 5th Grade

You are standing at the front of the room looking around at your students as they work.  You notice several are working very well independently, but the slower paced students are slow for a reason.  They are using their fingers as they try to determine what 6 x 4 is.

It's happening more and more frequently.... students just aren't memorizing their multiplication facts like they use to.  I theorize it is due to the newer standards implementing the "strategy" behind it rather than the "drill and kill."  But let's be honest, there are just some things students need to memorize - and multiplication is one of them!

Do you remember "Mad Minutes?"  It was (and still is) an example of the "drill and kill" methodology.  Well, I have created something similar.

In my Multiplication Boost Product, students begin with a half sheet of paper of problems all related to the ones.  They have 2 minutes to complete the sheet- which they do!  Once students pass the 1's, the move on to a sheet with both the 1's and now the 2's - but with a few more problems.  As students progress through the levels - the ones, the twos, the threes, so on, they earn a star on my chart.

Each level incorporates the previous levels and gets a bit longer.  Therefore students have to start speeding up to earn the star on the chart.  I have observed students typically get stuck around the 6's.  However, throw in an incentive and they start shooting up the chart again!

(at one time I called it Monster Math, but many people got it confused with a Halloween product.)

You can find this amazing product here at my TpT Store.

FREE LESSON - Flower Power Science

By:  The Owl Teacher
Grades 2-5

Flower Power science makes you think of the 60's a bit, I imagine.  But I'm not thinking of the 60's.  No, I'm thinking about teaching kiddos about how bees transfer pollen from a flower to another flower for reproduction.  In my fun, Flower Power FREEBIE, you can get your students all excited about flowers and pollination with a simple experiment that involves cotton balls and kool-aid.

This freebie comes with a detailed lesson and all the materials to make this lesson work for you (except the experiment materials such as kool-aid and cotton balls)

Check out this fun freebie here at my Teachers Pay Teachers Store!
