FREE MATH LESSON - “FREE Mathematical Practice Objective Display”

by Blair Turner
1st - 12th Grade

This Common Core Mathematical Practice Objective Display makes a practical and functional addition to your classroom.

The 8 mathematical practice standards have been turned into "I can" statements for easy reference.

These posters coordinate with my CCSS Objective Displays for 3rd and 4th grade.

The posters have the standard number at the top, the objective written in the middle, and a "status check" at the bottom.

From the CCSS website: The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students.

Since the mathematical practice standards are not grade-specific skills, I have replaced the word "mastered" on the status check with "it's a habit". These practices should be part of daily mathematical instruction and learning - thus, they are never necessarily mastered, but ideally they become habits for young problem solvers.

The posters, along with the “status check” feature, can be used in different ways. Here are two ideas:

1. Post the cards on your board as part of your daily objective display and use the status check to communicate to students whether they will be learning something new, practicing previously learned material, or assessing a standard.

2. Create an objective wall or learning target display. you can use the status check to keep track of where you are with each standard.

I recommend laminating the cards so that you can write on them with dry erase marker.

I have also included domain headings to help you create an organized and eye-catching display.
