6th - 12th Grade
This is one of my most effective first day assignments. I use it in my creative writing classes, but it could be used in a grade 6-12 English class when students are writing poetry, fiction or non-fiction.
It includes a picture of Olga(class of '11) and her book (she wrote the book during her Creative Writing 4 class, created the book cover for the assignment and published it on www.blurb.com). The kids really get into this assignment because they allow themselves to imagine their first published book- be it fiction, narrative non-fiction or poetry.
When all the covers have been turned in, I staple them to the bulletin board. Parents LOVE this on Back-to-School Night. It's also a great way for me to check their writing skills and plan lessons to meet the students' needs.
