Ice Cream Initial Letter Building

It's nearing the end of August, which means one thing - it's not long until we go back to School! My partner is finally off this week which means that we can go out and spend some time together, here's crossing my fingers for some great weather!

But, while my partner has been in work, I've been busy creating on TpT, and what a great time I've had this Summer! I had a to-do list so long, and requests constantly coming through to my inbox and it was great to be able to fulfil a lot of them.

One of the main things I wanted to accomplish this Summer was to be able to get some more images of my resources in action. I managed to get some of my Ice Cream Building:Initial Letters activity and I know you and your kiddos are just going to love this resource!

This resource is a great way for students to practice their initial letter sounds and working out which of the images go where.

The idea is for students to match the scoops of ice cream (with images on them) to the correct cone (initial letter of the image on the scoop).

I really do recommend laminating each of the parts included in this resource, just so they will be stronger and longer lasting for you, meaning you can pull them out year after year for your kiddos to enjoy.

It's also a great way to encourage students to work more independently, allowing you the chance to stand back and watch your student work. The resource is bright, fun and engaging, so your students are sure to love it!

This is also a great way for students to see different images that they may not recognise or become more accustomed to less regular images. It will give them the chance to practise their letter sounds and working out what each of the images start with. Plus, who doesn't love working with the alphabet and ice creams combined during the Summer!?

It's also a great resource to include in small speech/literacy groups, you can have it as a warm up game or even a cool down game.

Don't forget, if you would like any more information on this resource or where you can get it, simply click here.

Dice Bring Add the Room Activities to a New Level

Camping Bears Dice Add the Room provides fun and exciting math centers for learners to practice addition facts. This resource takes the popular Add the Room activity to another level. Learners use dice graphics to determine the addition equation represented by the number of dots on the dice.

This packet has 5 sets of Camping Bears Dice Add the Room cards. Each set has 10 cards. There is a recording page for each set of cards. The cards and recording pages have matching camping themed graphics featuring bears. Camping Bears Dice Add the Room works well with a camping, fishing or bears theme.

Print, laminate, and cut out the equation cards. Make copies of the recording pages.
Hang the cards in places all around the room. Give each student a clipboard, pencil, and recording page. Learners search the room for cards with dice graphics. When they find a card, they write the equation and sum represented by the number of dots on the dice in the correct space on the recording sheet.

For example, if a card has a die on the left side with 5 dots and a die on the right side with 2 dots, learners write 5 + 2 = 7 in the correct space on the recording sheet.

Have fun camping with your bear friends!

Beach Kids Ten Frames No-Prep Printables contain 34 ten frames no-prep printable pages for your learners to practice counting and labeling quantities of 11 to 20. This packet offers 2 different ink friendly formats to provide differentiation opportunities to best meet your learners’ needs. The beach kids themed graphics include kids surfing, kids with seashells, kids with sand pails, kids playing in the water, a girl by a palm tree, a kid lifeguard, a boy under a beach umbrella, and a girl building a sandcastle.

Beach FREEBIE: Kids at the Beach Subtraction Math Centers

Kids at the Beach Subtraction Math Center provides an inviting math center for learners to practice subtraction facts. There are 12 clothespin clip cards and a recording sheet in this packet. There is a subtraction fact and a choice of three differences printed on each clothespin clip card. The cards and recording sheet have beach themed graphics.

Kids at the Beach Subtraction Math Center works well with summer, beach, ocean, or vacation themes.

Print, laminate, and cut out the clothespin clip cards. Print the recording sheet that goes with the Clothespin Clip Cards. You will need 12 clothespins for this center. To keep with the beach theme, you may put the cards and clothespins in a sandpail.

Learners clip a clothespin on the correct difference or they can use dry erase markers to circle the correct difference. You may opt to make these cards self-checking by writing the answer on the back or marking a dot on the back at the correct spot.

After selecting the correct difference, learners write the equation and difference on the recording sheet.

Kids at the Beach Subtraction Math Center helps learners develop subtraction fluency and supports the Math Common Core Standards for Operations and Algebraic Thinking.

A post to share with parents: Writing and Reading in Summer Play!

Reading and writing through play!

Do you have a child who loves animals, may wish to be a veterinarian or doctor, and could use a little practice or writing his or her name? (Not that you would ever mention it...)

How about one who does not see the point in learning to read or write, but has a fantastic imagination?

IMG_7787.PNG - Copy IMG_7785.PNG - Copy

A sociable child with boundless energy, an interest in the law, perhaps, and exploring roles?

Maybe you have a child that likes to pretend to be grown-up sometimes, and receive the praise self-esteem boost that goes with it.
I admit to feeling very important as a 'waitress' at summer BBQs growing up. (My brothers preferred to be 'bartenders'). It was always more official and fun with a notepad in hand.

And once the drinks are handed out, someone is bound to start telling stories.

Perhaps your child is a fan of pirates, or a natural storyteller?

The child in this post could be any child.

Children learn without even realizing it through play, and read and write for real purposes .

We learned this way when we were kids. We played. We helped out. We didn't have the electronic distractions of today.

The templates above (and a few more) have been designed for today's more discerning audience in a product called Summer Fun: Reading and writing through play. It is included in a bundle with another Writing for Real Purposes product: Fun Summer Lists, which I wrote about here.

I have included the links below, and the original post that launched this line of products.

Kids love to imagine, create and role play. Thank you to those of you who do purchase these products. I hope anyone reading this post is inspired to play with their kids and discreetly slip in teachable moments where possible. The key is to have fun and let go of expectations. It is summer time after all.

Best wishes to all of you!

Fun Summer Writing - Lists templates for kindergarten and primary kids!

Fun Summer Lists cover.png - Copy

Many children today do not have much appreciation for the world of paper and pen. The electronic world is far more seductive and even the adults in their lives are likely spending time on laptops or smartphones. Guilty as charged over here.

While building writing skills may come easily to some children, it can be overwhelming and exhausting to others. What is in it for them? They simply must see a point to it for real-world purposes, and receive positive feedback. Kids do see us make lists - even if we make them on our smartphones. And kids do what we do (not necessarily what we say!) For our purposes today, writing will mean any communicating in print. We're talking about Kindergarten to grade two or three students of varying abilities.
Our goal is to help them understand why they are learning to write, buy into it and know that they are contributing members of society, who are appreciated for the contribution they are making by doing so!
Think of the possibilities for planning a day trip, or vacation....

13 Games I really like 14 Games I really want 15 Apps and Games that help me learn

Whether our child / student draws or pastes pictures, dictates to us while we scribe, prints in hieroglyphics, or phonetically spelled words, we need to make this real world connection and commend them for making the effort.

Especially in the summer!
Fun  Summer Lists is included in a WRITING FOR REAL PURPOSES bundle called Summer Literacy Fun Pack, with Summer Fun: Reading and Writing through Play pictured below.

These products were inspired by a post I wrote last summer (also pictured below) and by the effectiveness of these types of activities with my own children and students. I hope you enjoy them.

Think Summer! It's just around the corner!

Best wishes to all of you as we head into the final month of school!
