Be a Pumpkin Detective - Math

By Sparking Children's Thinkibility

Grades Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

Be inspired by Pumpkins!

How many seeds are in a pumpkin?
Ask your friends and family to estimate.
Estimation is a tricky concept but it is an important skill that is very useful when you go shopping.

This booklet contains a range of worksheets, some that require basic number skills, while others are a bit more complex.

Fun activities where the children are asked to make up their own math problems. Children often enjoy creating their own problems. This approach requires a deeper reflection upon numbers and basic arithmetic operations as compared to only providing an answer.

Pumpkin-inspired multiplication and division cards. Students can make their own problems.

1. Make a tally - How many seeds are in a pumpkin?
2. Add and give away pumpkins
3. Building blocks

4. Make up your own problems
5. Multiplication and division cards.

Color and black and white versions.

Teaching With Sight: Captivating Numbers

Hello, everybody!

My curriculum this year for math is very different from every other year. In the past, we've started with shapes and positions. But this year, we started with numerals, quantity, and counting. I found that many of my students that did not have pre-K were calling numerals "letters," "shapes," and all kinds of other terms that weren't numbers. You know what I mean. So I thought it would be really motivating to make differentiated number puzzles for my kids and have them work on them during morning work, and whenever they finish their other school work. After I assessed them and found out what numbers they needed to work on, I differentiated instruction by giving them these puzzles:

We used Microsoft Publisher to fit the range of numbers on a single page. Then we printed them out on colored card stock. We cut them individually, without guide lines, so that each puzzle would be unique. And the color of puzzle matches the color table they sit at. I put the cut-up puzzles in sandwich bags and had them in the kids' chair pockets by the time they arrived in the morning. They LOVED them!

We also took pictures of the students. I can't put them up yet, because I don't have all my photo release forms collected. But the students really enjoyed having their pictures taken while they were saying the numerals and putting the puzzles together. Teacher tip: You can also use these pictures for your students' portfolios and conferences.

Back to School Number Book Has Been Updated

Back to School Number Book Has Been Updated!

Back to School Number Book Tracing and Writing Numerals to 10 has been updated.  I am pleased with the results.  I hope you will like the updates, too.
If you already own this resource, please click here to download the updated version.

Back to School Number Book has numeral tracing and writing pages in with school themed graphics. This versatile product can be used for learners to make their own number book (in color graphics or black and white graphics) or each page can be used in math centers, as independent practice pages, or as homework. There are four different formats of the numeral pages included. These formats offer options for differentiation.

There is a coversheet provided in color and black and white options. You can use the coversheet with the numeral pages to let each learner make their own Number Book. You can use the same coversheet with the varied formats of numeral pages. This keeps students who need differentiation from feeling singled out because the cover of their book looks just like everyone else’s book.
Back to School Number Book contains the following components:
• Coversheet (Color)
• Coversheet (Black and White)
• Tracing and Writing Numeral Pages (Color)
• Tracing and Writing Numeral Pages (Black and White)

Learning in Motion: This Little Piggy Went to School Count the Room

This Little Piggy Went to School Count the Room

(Quantities to 20)

This Little Piggy Went to School Count the Room is a math variation of the student favorite activity “Write the Room.” This packet has 5 sets of 20 ten frames Count the Room cards and 2 recording pages for each activity to provide differentiation. The cards and recording pages have matching pigs at school graphics. The graphics include a pig with a notebook and pencil, a pig reading a book, a pig working at a table, a pig with a backpack and book, and a pig waving while sitting on a stack of books. These activities can be used for back to school or any time during the school year. This resource works well with a pig or farm theme.
This versatile resource has differentiation options to best meet the needs of your learners. You may select the cards A-J to practice quantities to 10. You may use all the cards (A-T) to practice quantities to 20. There is a recording page for each option.

After you have determined the quantity you are addressing with this activity, you may choose from different response options to best meet the needs of your learners.

• Learners may write the numeral for the quantity represented by the ten frames on the card.
• Learners may write the number word for the quantity represented by the ten frames on the card.
• Learners may draw tally marks for the quantity represented by the ten frames on the card.
• Learners may write the numeral for the quantity represented by the ten frames on the card and continue counting by writing the next 2 numerals. For example: With a ten frame representing 7, the learner would write 7, 8, 9 as a response.

Print, laminate, and cut out the ten frames cards. Make copies of the recording page for the quantities you have selected.

Hang the cards in places all around the room. Give each student a clipboard, pencil, and recording page. Learners search the room for ten frames cards. When they find a card, they write their response in the correct space on the recording sheet.

This Little Piggy Went to School Count the Room helps learners develop numeracy, and supports the Math Common Core Standards for Counting and Cardinality.

Have fun at school with your piggy friends!

Using Calendars for Number Fluency and Handwriting Skills. Pre-K, K, and First Grades

Have you ever passed out a blank calendar and half of your class finishes it in two minutes and the other half are unable to complete or even crying over the frustration of not being able to understand what to do?

How would you like to easily differentiate so that you could meet the needs of all your learners and help each one learn a bit?
