FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Quick Easy Reading Comprehension FREEBIE!!!”

by Beautiful Mathematics
2nd - 6th Grade

This effective take-home activity adapts the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) concept to differentiate the difficulty of reading comprehension questions on a simple template that students can use for a variety of readings. DOK is a scale used to determine the amount of thinking required for a given question or task. Aligning questions to varied DOK levels facilitates higher-order thinking and deeper learning for students.

The following reading comprehension template is simple and efficient. It works for pretty much any text (even math and science!). While there are four answer prompts listed across the top of the page, students are given a choice as to which question they'd like to answer. Each prompt is at a different level on the DOK scale: recall, skill/concept, strategic thinking, and extended thinking. Below this is a large box where students draw an illustrative sketch and also several lines for students to write their answers. If they cannot completely describe their answer in words, the teacher can assist with the writing while the student focuses on the sketch. Alternatively, students may attempt to write out what they intend to do and the teacher will make the necessary corrections. It's really up to you, the teacher! Make it work for your class.

I hope you find this reading comprehension template useful. Enjoy!
