Fall Writing Activities

First up a set of Fall Writing Activities with everything you need for the season. 32 Writing task cards consisting of Expository, Persuasive and Narrative writing ideas and story starters. Themes include Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Sandwich Day, Election Day, Candy Day and Cake Day. As an added extra, a humorous poster of a thinking turkey with the quote,"If this Turkey Could Talk, What Would He Say?" Great for discussion and or written assignment.

Halloween Spooks

Next is an excerpt from my BOOtober Creative Writing Resource. The teacher will read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving. You may choose a different story if you like. Discuss what makes a scary story. Be sure to let them know that suspense and surprise endings are important elements in this genre. For a collaborative activity, they will write a scary Halloween tale with their partners and each person will contribute. To spark their natural competitiveness, let them know that they will read their piece to the class who will choose which tale is the scariest. You could give the winning group something special for Halloween. When the appointed day arrives, have them sit in a circle and pretend they are around the

campfire, they can use flashlights for the effect.  Turn off the lights, play some scary music and set the stage.

So Much to Be Thankful For

I can remember my grandmother sitting in her big rocking chair that was placed in her favorite spot, next to a picture window where she kept all of her plants. I would sit on her lap and she would sing about the beautiful autumn leaves dancing to the ground in their colorful dresses. I can’t remember the tune or the words, but that wonderful memory has always been vivid in my mind. as if it were yesterday. I’m so thankful for this experience. 

I can remember standing on the front porch waiting for my mom to take me shopping downtown. I loved to shop with her. We used to go to a store called Eli Moore, they had everything that a little girl could want. First stop was the shoe department, and I’d get my black patten leather shoes, next we’d go to the clothes department. I was so spoiled back then, as an only child, I was showered with beautiful things to wear and great toys. Shopping done, we’d go to this café for lunch and a yummy desert. My mom passed on when I was 15 so these moments mean so much for me and I’m thankful for the short time that I was able to spend with her.

I have so many things to be thankful for, a wonderful husband, my Siberian Husky, friends and family who love me. We’re healthy, other than some aches and pains. Our house is in the woods and it is our own little paradise. I can’t think of anything else that I need, other than a few million dollars, lol!

As a teacher, I feel it’s part of my responsibility to help my students think about the good things that they have going, and to be thankful for their blessings. To introduce them to this activity, I tell them the story about my grandmother, and or my mom.  Then I will pass out task cards with Thanksgiving images on them and ask the kids to write down what they’re thankful for and we put them into a decorated Thanksgiving box. They can write as many things as they wish, The Wednesday before Thanksgiving recess. I pass the box around the room and each child, as well as myself, chooses a card and we read what is on it, then try to guess whose card it is and give it to its owner.

I usually end up moved to tears  and so do some of the kids, as this activity is so meaningful to all of us..

Misc. Lesson.- "La Cara - The Pilgrims- Parts of the Face in Spanish- Thanksgiving "

This interactive unit is the perfect lesson in November as part of Thanksgiving celebration. Using Pilgrims you can teach students to label the face in Spanish

The units contains

1- Vocabulary Page- 11 face parts with a word bank''

2- Label the Pilgrims - Students can cut the picture and cut each word and label the image on a separate page. They can use the words for labeling or have them write the words. It is important that they label "El Peregrino " y "La Peregrina" .

3- Word Search- to reinforce spelling and vocabulary. Great game if you have them compete at the end of the class to see who finishes it first. The first pair or group to complete it gets a HW pass. - You will hear screaming the words and having a ball looking for them.

Follow-Up

-Have students draw their portraits or bring pictures and label them
-Collect portraits and have students play "guess who?' Adivina Adivina quien soy? Just read eye-color, hair color
- You can also purchase "Thanksgiving Body Parts in Spanish -El Cuerpo"  Interactive lesson from my store and teach them body parts by labeling the little Indian girl .

4- Great sub plan- Have the sub go over the words and have students complete the package independently
