Creating a Monthly Reflection Memory Book with Your Students

How to Create the Monthly Reflection Memory Book

Some years ago I came up with the idea of having my students create a monthly reflection memory book for the year. I had them keep a monthly calendar of what was going on both at school and in their own lives at home. We would try and set aside time at least a few days a week at the end of the day to record any memorable moments.
At the end of each month, I would have my students take a look at their calendar page and use it to write a monthly summary. I would collect and hold onto both the calendar sheets and their monthly summary sheets.

Reflection on the Memory Book by a Former Student

Just this past Spring, a former parent came back and told me as they were preparing for high school graduation, she and her daughter found her special 3rd grade memory calendar book. They sat and pored over the details, remembering together some of the important family moments that had been recorded by the young student so many years ago. The parent ended our conversation by telling me just how special that book is to them. It had been tucked away for years in a bin of school memories and truly brought joy to both mother and daughter when they found it and looked back at their year.

Using Math Centers in the Upper Elementary Classroom

Practice makes perfect, right?  That is how the saying goes and I believe there is a lot of truth to it- especially in Math Class!

One way I try to give my students time to practice is by using Math Centers (or Math Stations).  Math Centers are not just for the primary grades.  Used effectively, math centers in the upper elementary classroom is a great way to allow students to hone their math skills.

There is no "easy setup" to begin math centers.  In order for them to be effective for YOUR classroom, centers are best tailored to the individual needs and behaviors of your class.  I have often had to try different ways to run math centers in a single year (looking for the best "fit" for my class!).

That being said, a basic plan can get you on the right track to making math centers work for you- how you implement them is up to you!
Here is how I have typically setup my math centers in the past.  This format has been used in 5th grade classrooms.

Center 1: Lesson Practice (this center/ station is a chance for students to immediately practice
the lesson of the day.  This can be done with worksheets, math books or other means
of trying out the new concept.  Students can work together or individually).
Center 2: Math Games (students work on practicing current skills and mental math skills by playing games in a small group setting).
Center 3: Math Task Cards (Task cards related to the current math unit).
Center 4: Write about Math (Students use their math journals to answer a writing prompt related to their current lessons).
Center 5: Work with teacher (Teacher calls students in groups to work on lessons and skills based on student needs.  I usually pulled students based on their exit ticket results from the lesson the day before).
Math Centers can be a lot of fun, just remember to have students practice expectations (transitions, cleaning up, etc) multiple times to help make things run smoothly.

Language Arts Lessons - "Teaching Literacy Skills with Charlotte's Web"

10 Reasons Why Charlotte's Web is a Good Book Choice for Read Aloud At School
and At Home

Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White, is  a universal story.  It has entertained hundreds of readers and children for decades. The book  teaches kindness and love.

As every writer knows, research, research and more research is very important... you must get the right moon in the night sky.  For Charlotte's Web, White's research was close to home as in lived on a farm in Maine.  His experience and farm color shows on every page.  The habits of the animals are characteristic and believable.  The reader gets to drop in flawlessly.
Charlotte, the heroic spider girl, is quite sophisticated.  This is a great opportunity for White to teach new words to children.  Gaining an extensive vocabulary benefits the child learning to read.  As you read aloud, Charlotte's Web, listening children understand story elements and grow their vocabulary.

Wilbur is our friend throughout the story. He expresses deep emotions, but he is still a pig and he likes to lie around in manure.   And his immediate and very dangerous plight is ...pigs go to slaughter.
And thus, Charlotte and Wilbur become friends.  White tried in real life to save a pig, but he failed. This experience gives power to his writing as  he shows so much compassion for Wilbur.  White tells his mixed feelings about pigs destined for the butcher in his story.  The children can feel the sadness and quickly become involved in this story of friendship and love.

And Charlotte, the heroine of this book, was also born in White's barn.  His many observations of spiders in the barn impressed him.  He found them weaving.  He found them clever.... and even clever enough to weave words!  and a writer for children would absolutely know this would grab their attention.   And he was right, because it certainly does.  This is a favorite part every time I read this book aloud.
Thank You, E.B. White, for your wonderful books.  You wrote a masterpiece!
Did You Know?
E.B. White wrote his novels on an old typewriter in his boathouse.  When he was not writing or doing chores on his farm; he liked to ride his bike long distances, even in bad weather.   When reading aloud to your class, tell them all you know about the author.  This makes the right connection between readers and writers.

And to answer the question I started with, Why Charlotte's Web?  Because it:
  • teaches friendship, kindness and love
  • the author writes masterpieces, every time!
  • theme is universal and it has lasted decades
  • a great springboard for class discussion
  • poses real-life problems in an imaginary setting
  • because your children will listen from page one to the end
  • reading aloud in school should be back in your lesson plans
  • children will learn new vocabulary
  • children will sympathize with the characters
  • It's a great book!

Many times readers choose the next book to read by the same author as they find they know something about the author which makes the reading familiar.  E.B. White's The Trumpet of the Swan is another unforgettable book experience.
