Mystery stories are not only fun brain teasers for grades 3-4 students, but also practice listening and inference making skills. These FREE mysteries will sharpen ALL of your students’ comprehension skills, especially their abilities to predict and to draw conclusions.
When to use the stories
They are high interest bell ringers, exit tickets, time-fillers, and best of all, carrots for the end of the day. Students will build classroom community by working together to solve the mysteries. Alternatively, early finishing or talented students could read the mysteries on their own.
How to use the stories
The most obvious methods of using these tales are to read them out loud or to show them on your screen. The students then guess the solutions. If you want them to work a bit harder, they could record and explain their guesses on the included worksheet.
Where are these stories from?
These mysteries are drawn from two Brilliantly Lit resources: ELA Games: 65 no-prep fun activities GRADES 3-4 and Brain Teaser Mystery Stories: 15 Stories for GRADES 3-4. Thus, they are displayed in different formats, with the mystery from the story collection including a clue page to give students a hint about the solution.
