6th - 9th Grade
Need a fun grades 5-8 grammar activity, perhaps for a brain break? In this FREE humorous grammar game, students will enjoy all the smiles and none of the agony of writing jokes by supplying only one word of the joke. For maximum fun, have students fill in grammatically appropriate words in the included grids BEFORE showing them the 24 joke PowerPoint! Make your students 1. ________ (verb) for joy!
The activity concludes with students writing a reflection piece on what they learned about grammar from the exercise.
Steps
1. After quickly reviewing the included grammar review sheet if necessary,
students insert grammatically appropriate words into two pages of grids. Keeping the jokes out of sight until they have finished their grids will lead to more hilarity. If they see the jokes, they will write words that always logically fit the blanks; that spoils the fun!
2. Students sit in small groups of equal size while you show the jokes PowerPoint on a screen. As each joke is displayed, they compare responses and decide
a) which word created the most humor
b) which word(s) did not fit grammatically.
3. (Optional) Students pick their group’s funniest version of three jokes to share with the whole class.
4. Students fill in the humor reflection sheet and color in the coloring borders.
Photocopying
Each student will need the two word grid tables and the grammar reflection sheet.
The PowerPoint joke slides, the student guidelines, and the quick grammar definitions review page can be projected on a screen.
