FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Clause and Phrase Game (FREE)”

by Jessica Osborne
3rd - 7th Grade

Cause and Phrase Race! This game is for students to practice the difference between a clause and a phrase. (It is helpful before teaching simple, compound, and complex sentences.) In groups they will race against each other to complete the task first. The teacher instructions includes four extension activity ideas (including completing the phrases and labeling subjects and verbs.) In early grades this game is a great introduction to the concept of clause vs phrase, while in later grades it serves as a fun review before introducing more difficult concepts like compound or complex sentences.

Common Core Standards:
~CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.1i (introduced here and reviewed in later grades)
~CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.1f* (introduced here and reviewed in later grades, is marked as a Common Core Language Progressive Skill)
