These books support and align with a Reader’s Workshop model,
as well as other Balanced Literacy models! They also help bridge reading & math!
They put simple to read and familiar text into the hands of emergent readers right from the start of the year!
*Great for guided reading groups & guided reading practice, reading book bags/baskets, buddy reading, make-a-book or math center, independent reading, sight word practice and/or review, shape words, concepts about print & more!
*Use to teach about proper book handling- how to hold a book, turn the pages, track words, spacing of words, etc.
*Print and use in full color for shared reading (you can project pages onto an Eno/Smartboard or print them larger) and then have students make their own books with the b&w versions- allows them to practice what you taught and have a book they can personalize, take home to read and keep!
*Instill confidence and pride in your youngest and most inexperienced readers right from the start so that they feel they are ‘readers’ and can go forward with a ‘can do’ attitude for the rest of the year!
*Use the book to guide beginning writing projects too- ex make class shape books. Shared writing books make great class books and are usually the books beginning readers flock toward! They also are great to share at meet the teacher night and/or parent/teacher conferences too! Have students work in groups to make the pages and compile into a class shape book!
