Ice Cream Science Makes for Interesting Informational Text

The recent push for kids to read more informational text has been partly due to the fact that kids just are not reading enough informational text. They think it's boring. A lot of their teachers didn't want to bore them, so they read stories with them instead. But teachers can make informational text interesting by engaging students with topics they like and using fun visual graphic organizers.

This lesson "Ice Cream Science" does that (and much more)!

Students read the informative text and learn that ice cream is an emulsion and a foam and that it must be frozen at just the right time to lock in those properties. Then, they fill out the following graphic organizer. Just like ice cream, it is not as easy at it looks.

Here is the full lesson complete with the informational text, graphic organizer, and the informative narrative that they fill in.
