FREE MATH LESSON - “Task Cards and Walk-About Sampler Freebie for Middle School Math”

by Positively Pre-Algebra Plus
6th - 9th Grade

Task Cards and Walk-Abouts are great activities to get students out of their seats, walking around, engaged in problem solving, and moving in math class! With so many ways to use these resources, differentiation becomes simplified and student ownership in their learning increases. Think daily warm-ups, math stations, review days, engagement activities, early finishers, etc. – use your imagination!

Students can work with a partner, small group, or individually to solve the problems one at a time, which allows students to improve focus and motivation. So many students become overwhelmed at worksheets containing 20 or more problems. By working on problems one at a time, our reluctant learners are more likely to participate and improve their math skills. Students can work in whatever order they want, so it is easy to spread them out across the room. Each problem is individually numbered and task cards also contain the learning objective on each card.

Half sheet student answer sheets are also included to help save on paper and copying costs. Printing each question on cardstock and laminating each will keep copy costs down and preserve the activity for years to come. I hope you and your students enjoy this activity as much as mine do!

FREE SCIENCE LESSON - “Seasons for Social Studies!”

by Debbie Bryant
1st - 4th Grade

Social Studies work teaches about our daily life. Seasons and climate are a big part of that!

In our work on Social Studies we look at how all the strands affect our daily lives. Geography/climate, economics, government, cultural traditions and even history all shape decisions we make in daily life – even as young students. These pages were taken from my All Year Social Studies TownBuilder product for grades 2-3 which is a comprehensive year-long study of all these strands.

Seasons affect many parts of daily life.

Climate, weather and the change of the seasons affect much of what we do each day. Many people choose where to live based on the climate. Weather can be both a helpful and destructive force for people and their property. The change of seasons allows for many different types of work, food, celebrations and recreation. Plants and animals also change their ways with the seasons.

These four Student Journal pages – Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer were included to show the effects of weather changes on how we live. They also integrate many science concepts of weather and plant and animal life cycles.

Thanks to a great suggestion by a tpt friend I have added an "Autumn" page to this freebie. It is identical to the Fall page, with Autumn as the heading so you may choose which heading you prefer.

-Make connections between your life and the seasons, and between the seasons themselves.
-Describe relationships between the seasons and your activities, clothing, food, work, traditions...
Describe relationships between the seasons and plant and animal life cycles.

I ask the students to draw their house, themselves and at least one plant and animal as they would be living in each season. Their house may be covered with snow, or sporting a fall wreath or some holiday decorations. The student may be raking leaves, shoveling snow or playing in a backyard swimming pool. Plants may be dormant, blooming or producing fruits. Animals may be migrating away or nesting. The students will have their own ideas and there are more ideas for each season on the next page.

The last page is a writing format for the students to explain what they drew for each season. Question prompts are included.
Enjoy!

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “A First Look at Poetry”

by Dianne Mason
11th - 12th Grade

This short poetry lesson benefits student understanding of poetry. Used before beginning a unit on poetry, the activities in this product guide students to formulate a definition of poetry which they will then compare to the definitions in a dictionary and by various poets.

The goal is for students to refine their thinking about what poetry is, how accessible it can be to them, and how reading it can be of benefit. A list of suggested poems about poetry to use in classroom discussion is included along with a glossary of terms.

This product is also available as part of a discounted bundle Understanding Poetry along with How to Closely Read a Poem and Using Prose to Understand PoetryIt is also part of another, larger 50% discounted bundle of 8 lessons 8 poetry Lessons Bundle.
